I have been wanting to update our kitchen ever since we moved in. Back in February when I left for a trip for a few days my super sweet husband put up our backsplash in our kitchen. I was so in love with the way it turned out. I kept finding more and more things on pinterest that I just HAD to do. Pros and cons of pinterest.. Pro: house looks great Con: Hubby has endless amounts of projects. I love having such a handy hubby.
So today I wanted to share with you our recent project and how to do it yourself if you like it. I LOVE all things board and batten. I am pretty sure soon enough our whole house will be covered in it. I am so obsessed with how awesome it looks when you're all done.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
If you have a nail gun your life will be easier (if not hammer will do)
Saw (electric is nice) - you can also have them cut the dimensions you need at home depot
Measuring Tape
Nails
Wood
Spackle
Blue Tape
Backing Board (preferably primed white already)
6 Boards (primed white)
4 inch baseboards (primed white)
*we have a builders bargain store here which had all the wood we needed at half the price
This is the before shot, and it's messy so no judging :)
The first thing you will do is measure your width and height of the area you want to board and batten. Once you have measured that you can get a better understanding of how much wood you will need. If you are getting everything cut for you, you will need to do A LOT of measuring. If you are cutting yourself then just give yourself extra room to work with. We always air on the side of caution.
Once we cut the plywood we nailed it to the studs in our wall. This allows for extra security.
Once all the boards were up my husband measured and cut the 4 inch baseboards to go on top and bottom and we nailed them up. Then it was time to measure and cut the boards to go between. We did 6 total boards two on the ends and four in the middle. It was quite the head scratch to figure out how to perfectly space them apart because of the width of our wall. Once that was figured out which ours are 16.456782789 inches apart we were able to nail them up so maybe not exactly that but it was down to the 1/16th of a inch. So confusing.
Then we cut boards to break up the wall and add more character. Once again measure the space between and then cut the boards to nail in.
Continue all the way through till the end of the wall.
Starting to look EXACTLY like I wanted it to. Doesn't even have paint on it yet, or Spackle.
Half way Spackle and no paint. I would be content just with this.
Once we had the whole thing Spackle we taped it all off with scotts blue tape. I am talking VERY well taped. And we borrowed a paint spray gun and just sprayed the WHOLE thing down. Now I was down for the old fashioned just paint the thing, but the husband wanted to be all fancy. Either way it works and does the job well :)
And a better look at the finished product! I am so so excited about how it turned out! We are going to continue the pattern on the side of the wall to make it blend better ;)
Eventually I will be decorating as well once I find the right furniture. I hope to put some form of plant in the corner and maybe slide my barcart in front of the wall and decorate it. This is the fun part that sometimes takes FOREVER to find just the right thing.
