Teething Monster

We are at it again, in full blown teething mode. I was sure that this girl was going to blow through teething super fast since she cut her first tooth at 4 months old. Well we are now almost 18 months old and we still have 6 more teeth to cut.

Around 14 months Lucy started cutting her molars, that took 6 weeks.. 6 long, painful weeks of no appetite, irritability and waking up at night. It was exhausting and I felt helpless. The poor thing would just cry and cry and cry out of pain. She is cutting her cuspids right now the canines. These have been just as hard has the molars, and I feel as if it will only get even more worse when she begins cutting her two year molars. Hopefully all in moderation right?

I thought I would share a few things we do to relieve teething pain for all of you out there who may be in the same boat. If I were able to have a glass of wine with my bubble bath after Lucy goes down for the night that would be all I write ;) But since that sounds like a terrible mother I shall share what has helped us!!

Teethers that go in the freezer : You can find them EVERYWHERE like I am pretty sure the dollar store carries a variety of them. We were never huge fans of the teethers that had some form of water or gel on the inside just incase she were to bite through it. So we found a teether that was perfect for us. You all know we are big fans of the Honest Company. We purchased their teether and we love it, more importantly Lucy loves it! You can purchase it here

Frozen Bananas - These have been a staple since she was itty bitty. We would chop up frozen bananas and place in the silicone bag that she could chew on. Now that she is a bit older we make frozen banana Popsicles. Just cut half a banana and place it on a stick and put it in the freezer. Great alternative to a normal sugar loaded Popsicle.. even though those work just as fine too, and we have done those many times ;)

Hylands Teething Tablets - Swear by these. Lucy knows that they are now and literally gets excited to eat them. They are a great homeopathic remedy for teething. When she is in full blown teething mode we usually do 3 tablets 4 times a day. Don't use them for more than 7 consecutive days.. well that's what the packaging says! You can find them here

Sophie - Lucy never really took a huge liking to sophie as a teether, but as she got older she really enjoys chewing on her. Whether she is zoning out chewing on her legs or chomping down on her head she loves all the ways sophie offers relief ;) You can find a baby sophie for the little ones here and the big size sophie here
We ordered both and they have been well loved ;)

Amber Teething Necklace - This is actually new to our household. We are trying it out today actually. I am always willing to try anything and everything that has helped someone else. I was recommended this, so we are trying it! If any of you have had success or not so much I would love to hear. We ordered ours through Amazon, which you can find here

Patience - This is not something you can buy unfortunately, although there are many days I wish I could just inject a butt load of it into me. Having patience with your poor little one is the best thing for her/him. If you need to turn on a movie so you both get a little break. Or lay them down early for a nap if you need a break. There is nothing wrong with you taking a little time for yourself if you need to.

Pacifier - we have agreed that we will not try to take her pacifier away until after she has all her teeth. It is INSTANT relief for her when she is teething. She only gets it when she is napping and sleeping or if she is super super super irritable and whiny. We try not to fold too much but when I can fully see her gums swollen or even bleeding I have nothing in me holding back something I know will give her instant relief. We use the soothie pacifiers still and she LOVES them.

Raw Rice Wrapped In a Wash Cloth - I know sounds crazy. Place a small amount of raw rice {I used jasmine} in the middle of a washcloth and place a rubber band around it and place it in the freezer. Once it has been frozen for a while you can take it out and let your little one chew on it. Feels super good on their gums.

Cold Veggies & Fruit Smoothies - For Lucy appetite is the first to go when she is teething. So I usually try to get creative with her nutrients. I love to make her smoothies that have plenty of spinach and fresh fruits as well as vitamin C and some milk for added protein and nutrients. You can find hundreds of recipes online and I posted about one that you can find here. I also will be whole carrots for her to teethe on as well as ice cold cucumbers.

I am sure there are other things I am missing that have been huge staples for us, but these are the ones that instantly come to mind. She also just chews on her fingers and everything else in the house to relieve pain ;)

Hope this helps you mamas out there who are going through teething as well
xoxo

  1. These are great recommendations! H still only has her four top and bottom front teeth and 1 set a few spaces away on too and bottom and she will be 2 in 4 months! I'm worried she will never get teeth but I will be trying some of these if we ever have rough days!

  2. Wow that's impressive, some babies take longer to get all their teeth, but they say the longer they wait to cut through the stronger the teeth will be ;) I hope these help when you go through it, it is no fun but one day at a time and you get through it right? ;)

  3. Ellia didn't get her first tooth until she was 11 months and only had 2 at her first birthday! Now they are coming in super quickly, we are at 10 + 2 currently cutting and her molars have been SO HORRIBLE!! The past few weeks have been a nightmare for her, runny nose and sick too. Thanks for all the suggestions, she loves bananas, going to put one in the freezer right now!! Hope L feels better and gets some relief soon! xo

    1. That is amazing.. 11 months is awesome, although I bet she got them all super quick which I imagine was terrible. Molars are seriously the WORSE!! Like absolutely nothing seemed to help her with those, I am slightly terrified what the two year molars will be like. I hope that she cuts them super quick so you all can go back to your normal happy days. I hope they help :) And thank you, me too. I hope sweet Ellia gets relief really soon, I cannot even imagine what angels they will be when all their teeth are in. I mean what will they have to complain about ;)
